Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
